Javier Alvarez discovered his passion for sculpture in 2000 when he learned to work with soapstone. From 2003-2006 he completed his training as a stone sculptor. From 2006-2011 he works and lives in Andalusia in Spain where his parents are originated. There he specializes in working with marble. By working on high-quality construction projects with natural stone, the visual language of Mediterranean architecture influences his perception of geometry. In the marble region of Macael he finds the professional environment for demanding stone projects. In 2010 he did a chain saw carving course as part of the International Wood Sculptor Symposium in Davos, Switzerland. In 2011 he moved back to Germany and completed his further training as a master stonemason and stone sculptor and as a state-certified stone technician in Munich by 2013. There he comes into lively contact with wood artists through the neighboring wood carving school, which influences his way of thinking and working. He then works as a freelance sculptor and spends a year in Carrara, Italy where he has the opportunity to get to know the local sculptor scene. Due to his increasing interest in the relationship between object and space, he studied interior design in Rosenheim from 2015 to 2020. During this time, Alvarez increasingly deals with digital methods of form finding and computer-aided production. During his studies he completed an internship semester at Joseph Walsh Studio in Ireland where he worked as a technical design developer and get to know the technique of freeform laminating wood. In 2018 he spent a semester abroad in Barcelona, where he was inspired by the modernist architecture of the city.
